Manuela Andrack takes you on magical hikes with water as your companion along the way.
The ancient Greeks already knew: Water is the noblest element. And although hikers generally prefer hiking to swimming, they love walking along bodies of water.
It is no coincidence that hikes along local rivers are so popular. The Rhine Trail and Moselle Trail have by now become classic long-distance routes. The Ahr Trail and Nahe Trail are also growing in popularity. And everyone who has stood at the Saarschleife knows what magic a winding river can exude (!).
But still waters are wonderful too. Countless hiking trails in Germany wind around ponds and lakes, both small and large. The greatest water spectacle, of course, is provided by waterfalls. It is no coincidence that the Waterfall Trail in Bad Urach was voted Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail.
Hans Castorp is fascinated by this in The Magic Mountain too: “He crossed the footbridge and sat down to enjoy the sight of the cascading water and the drifting foam.” Thomas Mann put it beautifully: The waterfall is a full-scale cinematic spectacle, pure nature entertainment.
Research on hiking has found that, alongside summits and castles, bodies of water are among the three most popular destinations for the hikers surveyed. Although it should be noted that at many castles along the Rhine and Moselle, for example, the view of the water is part of the experience too. And standing on the summits of Saxon Switzerland, I see: the Elbe.
