How the sustainable product is made
Current environmental events such as severe storms, massive flooding and the disappearance of ice glaciers once again demonstrate how important it is to address environmental issues and sustainability. By sourcing materials from nature, BÄR wants to contribute and continue to embrace sustainability as a challenge. Sustainable design provides answers to the major challenges of our time and changes the way people live. In the foreseeable future, products and services that make this possible will prevail. This is where design and responsibility meet. The trend is clearly moving toward natural materials!
The term crepe therefore does not refer only to a lightweight papier-mâché that immediately dissolves, but to a 100% vegan material obtained and processed from trees!
The latex milk is processed under strict hygiene standards to ensure the purity of the product. Once the liquid coagulates, it forms a viscous mass that is pressed with a roller into a thin, fine layer of rubber. The dried rubber layers are placed on top of one another until they reach a thickness of 10 mm, then fused together so that they adhere securely. The soles can now be punched from the crepe sheets.
Producing natural crepe soles is extremely labor-intensive and complex, requiring extensive expertise. The rubber is sourced from the Kelani Valley Plantation in Sri Lanka. Founded in 1992, Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL) owns and manages 13,000 hectares of plantation land and produces three million kilograms of rubber annually from an area of 4,500 hectares.
Because of the material’s authenticity and its 100% natural sourcing, the natural crepe sole may undergo certain changes.
• The welt around the sole may become discolored
• Over time, small fringes may form along the edges (pilling), demonstrating the sole’s natural character.
• The welt’s natural color—as well as the crepe—will darken over time and develop an individual patina.
• The sole will become discolored over time through ordinary dirt; it can be cleaned with water or Bamboo Lotion.
• As a natural product, the rubber reliably adapts to the ambient temperature, which means the sole may feel firmer in winter and softer in summer
